Studies on the Selection in Red Pepper Breeding

Abstract
The studies were intended to clarify the correlations between the characters and the influences upon yields of red peppers. The analysis of covariance was used to obtain the genotypic correlations and the phenotypic correlations among the five characters stem length, stem diameter, riped fresh fruit weight riped fresh fruit number and riped dry fruit weight etc., and the path-coefficients were calculated by Dewey¢¥s method (9).
The results obtained are summarized as follows:
1. The yield of red peppers was mainly associated with the characters such as riped fresh fruit weight, and riped fresh fruit number per plant, etc.
2. Stem diameter and riped fresh fruit weight per plant have positively influenced directly upon the yield of red peppers.
3. Stem length alone had negative direct influence upon yield but it had rather considerable indirect influence upon yield by increasing the stem diameter.
4. Riped fresh fruit number also find little or negative influenced upon yield but it had rather considerable indirect influenced upon yield by increasing the riped fresh fruit weight and riped dry fruit we ight of red peppers.
As a result, it can be concluded that stem length is primarily determined by stem diameter and in turn the yield of red pepper is secondary determined by the fresh fruit number and the fresh fruit weight which are positively correlated with the dry fruit of red peppers.
